Yard Waste Organics & Leaves

curbside - 2nd collection - monday or tuesday

Place all yard waste curbside for collection the night before your scheduled pickup.

The Commission will NOT collect more than ten (10) bags or ten (10) cans of yard waste in any one collection. Bags/cans of organics may not weigh more than 75lbs.

Excess material may be brought to the Maxwell Avenue Recycling Center by residents only. Landscapers and Gardeners may not bring organic material to the Maxwell Avenue facility.

Yard waste will only be accepted if it is placed in biodegradable brown paper bags or into a garbage can with nothing else in it. Yard waste placed in a plastic bag or in another type of container will not be picked up.

Yard waste consists of:

• Grass clippings, leaves, small branches (bundled) and other plant material, no dirt is to be mixed in.

• Tree branches and twigs cannot be longer than 4 feet long and no more than 4 inches in diameter, tied or placed into a biodegradable bag or otherwise empty garbage can.

Loose dirt is not considered yard waste and will not be accepted.

It is illegal to mix yard waste and either household garbage or recycling.

Yard Waste curbside collection runs from April until October 31st. For the rest of the year yard waste should be brought to the Maxwell Avenue facility.

Fall Leaf Collection

Leaf Blowers - Both the Town of Mamaroneck and the Village of Larchmont have restrictions in place for leaf blowers.

OPTION A: Curbside Pick Up

We will collect fall leaves that have been raked loose to the curb or collected in bio-degradable bags. They cannot be mixed with any tree or brush debris. Pick up your first collection day of the week after trash is collected.

If leaves are mixed with other yard waste, they will not be collected.

OPTION B: Mulching - Love ‘em and Leave ‘em

Along with our neighbors along the Sound Shore and across Westchester, we are encouraging residents to mulch their leaves. Mulching leaves – mowing them in place – provides natural fertilization and protected for your yard before the winter strikes. Mulching is good for the environment and good for your lawn, and we hope you'll consider it this year!

Christmas Trees

Curbside collection will be Christmas trees from December 26th through January 31st.
Please remember to remove, tinsel, garland, lights, ornaments, and stand.

Bulk - Large Items

curbside - 3rd Collection - thursday or friday

Bulk is set out once a week, at the same time as your third scheduled garbage pickup on either Thursday or Friday morning by 6:00am.
Bulky items shall be placed at the curb (off the road and sidewalk) and cover an area no larger than 8 ft. long and 4 ft. wide. 
There is a limit of three pieces of large bulky waste per collection.
Different types of rubbish and large items are governed by different rules; please carefully consult these rules to ensure that your rubbish is collected.

Can be collected curbside:

• Furniture pieces. No more than 2 (two) pieces per pickup. All metal must be removed.

• Sofa beds. Metal bed frames must be removed.

• Mattresses and box springs. Must be wrapped in plastic.

• Wood pieces. Maximum of 4 feet x 6 inches. Must be tied in manageable bundles.

Metal items are any large metal rubbish – such as a metal bed frame, a bicycle, or a whole set of pots and pans.

Major household appliances. After removing any freon – washers, driers, freezers, stoves, air conditioners, refrigerators, and dehumidifiers.

Private Disposal Items

Curbside Collection is Not available for these items:

• Construction Debris. Contractors must remove and dispose of all construction debris. If you're doing the work yourself, then you must hire a private carter to take the debris away.

• Dirt

• Tires. Bring back to the dealership.

• Large ceramics, including toilets and sinks, flower pots, and ceramic tiles.

• Non-burnable materials, including, building and construction materials, wood or metal frame windows, screens, tree stumps, dirt, and rocks or stones.

• Extra large items, including pianos, armoires, pool tables, bath tubs, etc...

• Compact Flourescent Light Bulbs. CFLs are accepted at Home Depot and True Value.

• Acid, chemicals, solvents, etc. Accepted at Westchester County Disposal Facility - H-MRF. Call 914-813-5425.

• Long fluorescent bulbs. Accepted at Westchester County Disposal Facility - H-MRF. Call 914-813-5425.

Electronic Waste

Residents of the Town of Mamaroneck and Village of Larchmont must bring all electronic waste directly to the Maxwell Avenue Facility or to the Westchester County H-MRF in Valhalla.

Do not put out electronic waste with your rubbish, recycling, or garbage for curbside pickup. Alkaloid and Carbon-Zinc batteries can be safely discarded in the trash.

Personal Privacy Protection

Improperly disposing of electronics can put your personal information and private electronic data at risk – increasing the risk of identity theft and other harmful consequences. To protect your privacy, make sure you thoroughly wipe your hard drive before donating or disposing of your electronics. Simply deleting files is not enough; traces of your personal data remain unless you download dedicated software or bring your electronics to a licensed retailer.

Food Waste

Here's How To Do It:

1. COLLECT your food waste in a countertop pail. Although not required, you may line your pail with a compostable bag - please no plastic or biodegradable bags. Compostable bags are available for purchase (roll of 25 bags for $3.00/roll). Most residents will fill the countertop pail with food waste 3-4 times per week.

2. TRANSFER that food waste into the larger bin for weekly storage. This larger bin can also be used to transport the food waste to the Maxwell Avenue Recycling Center. Anything that holds around 5-6 gallons and has a lid will work. It is recommended that food storage bins be kept indoors - either in the house or in the garage.

3. BRING your transportation bin to the Food Waste Recycling drop-off bins at the Maxwell Avenue Recycling Center to dispose of your food waste as often as needed.

Westchester County Disposal Facility - H-MRF

Westchester County has opened a permanent Household Material Recovery Facility (H-MRF) on the Grasslands Campus in Valhalla. The H-MRF accepts household chemicals, electronics, Freon containing appliances, scrap tires, BBQ tanks, and confidential documents for shredding. The H-MRF is open 3 days a week, including Saturdays. Residents must schedule an appointment to drop off waste at the site. Protecting our Waterways - What not to flush down the toilet (or dump in a storm drain)

Improperly disposing of garbage and household refuse can have significant impacts on our rivers, streams, ponds, and Long Island Sound – and can even make flooding in our Town and Village worse. You can help prevent blocked sewer lines, clogged equipment in sewage pump stations, and polluted water if you're careful about what you flush down the toilet, dump in the sink, pour down the storm drain, or onto the ground in your driveway or backyard.

• Wipes are a major cause of sewer problems. They do not break down on their way through the pipes to the treatment plant. Even if advertised as "flushable," they should be thrown in the garbage, not the toilet.

• Grease, oils, and fats. These solidify and can block your own household pipes as well as the sewer line. Collect them in an old jar with a lid, store them in the refrigerator, and throw them in the garbage when full.

• Chemicals. Everything from paint to anti-freeze, solvents, pesticides, herbicides, kerosene, and motor oil is toxic to our environment.

• Other cloggers, such as paper towels, rags, diapers, bandages, band aids, litter and tissues. These should all be thrown in the garbage.

• Plastic of any kind. Once it's in the water, Plastic does not break down and has to be physically removed.

• Prescription and over-the-counter drugs. Drugs can have major impacts on organisms up and down the food chain, and on us.
